Rotorua, the Volcanic City

Hello Kids,
I hope you kids enjoy reading my letters on New Zealand. This time I shall tell you about the volcanic city, Rotorua.

Geysers: Minutes from the city centre, geysers of steaming water roar from the ground and you can see pools of bubbling mud. In the geothermal fields around Rotorua, steam rises from placid lakes and flowing streams.

Towering volcanoes, now sleeping giants, are unmistakable reminders of the landscape’s turbulent past. The extinct volcanic craters provide the setting for crystal lakes.
Eleven major lakes sparkle in the landscape around Rotorua. The city of Rotorua nestles on the shore of the largest volcanic crater, Lake Rotorua.

Have A Nice Time: There are a lot of things you could do in the city. You could run or slide down the slope of an extinct volcano or take a bungee jump from one of the towers that offers the sport. You could even hurl down white water rapids on a raft or a sledge. There are great forest trails for mountain biking or hiking. You could take a ride in a helicopter, biplane or floatplane over the city and maybe, land on a dormant volcano — or even an active one!

The Volcano

Rotorua has an active, breathing volcano. It lies close to the city of Auckland. From the moment you enter Rotorua, you know you’re in a place quite different from any other. Plumes of steam issue from parks, pathways and streets, and the occasional scent of sulphur wafts through the air.
